Until Eco Crown, the hospitality industry has lacked a reliable and consistent universal measurement for environmentally responsible accommodations. In a world where a ‘false green' economy may very well spiral out of control, consumers need reassurance that an accommodation proclaiming itself to be eco-friendly actually has policies and operating procedures that truly are green and sustainable.
Consumers need to be guaranteed that they are receiving a genuine product and are not being duped by marketing ploys to attract the eco-conscious traveller. With Ecoreservation, we guarantee that any properties listed within our site participate in the minimum of an established and approved ‘green' program.
While some ‘ green programs' are viewed respectively as the “first step” towards becoming genuinely environmentally responsible, our Eco Crown Certified properties and Eco Crown Brand properties are all held to the highest global environmental standards where each property's policies and practices are monitored and reviewed every three months.
Eco Crown's tracking and monitoring systems set our properties apart from the rest by providing environmentally responsible lodging options that are guaranteed to be a ‘green' you can measure.
Our policies and environmental criteria cover the following areas:
- Air Quality
- Land Use
- Energy Efficiency
- Waste Management and Recycling
- Water Quality and Resource Conservation
- Human Health
- Community and Social Responsibility
Air Quality
What systems are in place to improve air quality? Does housekeeping use all natural products? What is the accommodation's pet policy? Are vehicles permitted to idle in the parking lot? Does the property use alternatively-fuelled vehicles? Are there indoor plants and air filters in place?
Land Use
Are chemicals, pesticides or other harmful pollutants used on the land? Does the property compost? Is landscaping debris composted and returned to the land? Does the property incorporate landscaping techniques that reduce the need for artificial fertilization and watering?
Energy Efficiency
What practices does the accommodation use to be more energy efficient? Is preventative maintenance performed on a regular basis? Is natural light used whenever possible? Are light fixtures clean with energy efficient light bulbs in use? Are dimmer controls being used?
Waste Management and Recycling
What materials are part of the recycling program? What measures are in place to reduce waste? How are these wastes handled? Are guests informed as to how they can participate?
Water Quality and Resource Conservation
Are water saving devices used in toilets, faucets and showerheads? Is gray water being re-used? Are storm drains being kept clear of debris and hazardous run-off? Do water features on the property recycle water? Are sprinklers monitored and positioned so that they only water plants?
Human Health
Does the accommodation use all natural hygiene and cleaning products? Are their recreation facilities available to staff and guests? Are there indigenous and organic options on the menu and in snack bars and common areas?
Community and Social Responsibility
Does the accommodation incorporate cultural considerations into their operations? Are guests informed of local cultures and customs? Is the local community provided with economic benefit? What proportion of the staff employed are local people? Are there any programs to support the local community?
Certification
There are many certification or ‘rating' programs worldwide. Not all of these programs actually give any guarantee that their participants are any more ‘green' than non-participants.
Eco Reservation hosts properties who are members of these groups but it is up to the consumer to decide whether the standards of these individual programs and accommodations meet their green needs.
Any property certified by Eco Crown Hospitality is guaranteed green with each accommodation's environmental policy available to consumer upon request.
